Study of Ward Education Committee in Maheshtala Municipality

The present study, keeping this background in mind, is to conduct an exploratory study to know the status of the Ward Education Committee (WEC) in the Maheshtala Municipal Area (MMA) in the district of South 24 Parganas, West Bengal. In order to understand the prevailing scenario related to the proper functioning of WECs and the problems encountered by them for non-functioning and problems being faced by the community due to the WECs being non-functional will be brought under the study purview. The study has been divided in three parts. The first section deals with the understanding of community participation, particularly in the primary education and composition and functions of WECs. The next section contains the ground reality of WECs in MMA as revealed through field surveys and experiences. The third section deals with suggestions and recommendations to make WECs more functional in MMA.
