A Study on Child Labour in South West Kolkata and Maheshtala Municipality

Right Track has undertaken the initiative to support the children living in extreme deprivation over the following 3 years (2008-10) considering their Right to Education being its prime focus, especially with Universal Elementary Education – a fundamental right for all children in the age group of 6-14 years in the country. With reference to the profile of the child labourers in the area both school going and non-school going children would be reached out through its interventions based on their needs, age and nature of vulnerability.

Therefore the ” Study on Child Labour in Maheshtala Municipality” aims at understanding the nature and forms of child labour, the background of the children engaged in labour, extent of vulnerability and abuse confronted by the children and the reasons that perpetuates child labour in the area so as to be able to draw the future strategies to eliminate child labour therein with appropriate need based interventions and advocacy efforts.
